Farmer & Grower Bootcamp: Beyond the farm gate - making more from your product

In the current climate, we know farmers and growers are looking at how they can make more from the raw products they are growing, through value add opportunities beyond the farm gate.

In this Bootcamp, we'll look at some practical examples of farmers and growers who are adding value to their products accross the value chain.

Our guest speakers include:

  • Sophie Hurley from Honest Wolf on how they came to take wool from their sheep & beef farm at Hunterville, and create gorgeous overnight bags and other everyday goods. Honest Wolf will share how they embarked on the venture and what running a customer facing business from a farm involves.

  • Speirs Foods on how they are working with supermarkets and producers to meet consumer preferences, and identify new opportunities in the market. Speirs will share with us their journey of pivoting their business over the past three years, and responding to ever changing consumer trends.

Along with hearing from our speakers - and spending time asking them the hard question - we'll spend time after dinner drilling down into the problem. That is, understanding for farmers and growers, what the important things are when it comes to making more from your produce.

We'll be using this information to inform future innovation projects the Rural Innovation Lab engages in. We'll also give you a brief update on what we've been up to over the past six months, and what we have planned.

Arrival, drinks and nibbles from 5.00pm, for a 5.30pm kick off. Everyone attending receives a complementary drink on arrival, with a cash bar running following that. Dinner and sweet treats provided. So, join us for an evening of thought provoking discussion, workshopping, and a beer and a chat with your fellow farmers and growers!

Farmer & Grower Bootcamp: Reducing costs and waste on farm

In the current climate, all farmers and growers are looking at how they can cut down on unnecessary costs and wastes on farm or in the market garden - through more innovative and lean approaches.

In this Bootcamp, we'll discuss lean thinking and look at some practical examples of farmers and growers who have implemented technology that's helping them be more efficient.

Our line up includes Jana Hocken, who has helped hundreds of companies across the globe apply lean thinking to their operations, and more recently applied those principles to farming. Other speakers to be announced.

Along with hearing from our speakers (and spending time asking them the hard questions) we'll spend time after dinner drilling down into the problem - understanding for farmers and growers what’s so important to you when it comes to maximising efficiencies, and what you want to see change. We'll be using this information to inform future innovation projects the Rural Innovation Lab engages in. We'll also give you a brief update on what we've been up to the past six months, and what we have planned.

Arrival, drinks and nibbles from 5.00pm, for a 5.30pm kick off. Dinner and sweet treats provided. So, join us for an evening of thought provoking discussion, workshopping, and a beer and a chat with your fellow farmers and growers!

Get your Field Days off to a great start and your mind humming with a breakfast with your fellow farmers and growers from across the region to discuss…

The 4th industrial revolution of data and digital technology is sweeping the world disrupting just about every business and community. Uber has disrupted our taxi’s, using our cars, and Airbnb is challenging the way we rent accommodation, using our homes. Consumers are more informed than ever and are demanding a better understanding of how food is produced.

During the breakfast we’ll be discussing:

  1.  How do we as farmers and growers take advantage of the technology and the digital age?

  2. How can tech and innovation help with compliance?

  3. How can we create value for our farmers and communities in this changing world?

  4. How do we set our region up to help the next generation succeed?

Come and share your thoughts and ideas around disruption within the food business, and learn how you can become part of the smart farm network.

About the Rural Innovation Lab (RIL)

The Rural Innovation Lab is as a new and exciting collaboration between farmer, growers, technologist and scientists across the Horizons region. It is driven by and puts farmers and growers at the centre of the innovation process. Our ambition is for New Zealand farmers and growers to be seen on the global stage as smart, innovative and sustainability responsible for our agri-food exports around the world. Minister for Agriculture Damian O’Connor launched the RIL at the FarmCave in Palmerston North on 26 February and announced Government funding of $400,000 to support our activities. This breakfast is the first of a number of events you’ll see popping up across the region.
